This was our second commission for Lexus, working in collaboration with Lexus, DMS media and Hamilton ice sculptors.
Our involvement was to engineer 4 acrylic wheels which would fit perfectly in the existing Lexus NX axles or wheel fittings. The 50mm thick acrylic wheels had to withstand the total weight of nearly 2 tonnes. The acrylic tensile strength was analysed thoroughly against the dispersed weight of the car. The results came back positive, which enabled us to go ahead with the project more confidently. The ice detailing was then added to the back and the front of the acrylic wheel, creating a "sandwich" and making the whole wheel appear to be made in ice only, due to the optical quality of acrylic.
This project was also featured on Channel 4 in a documentary called "A frozen Christmas" aired on December the 28th 2005. An internet viral video was also created on youtube with more than 750k views in the first week of uploading it!
